Consumer Expenditure Inequality in Bulgaria: A Gini Coefficient Decomposition

Summary/Abstract: This paper investigates consumer expenditure inequality in Bulgaria by applying a Gini coefficient decomposition to household consumer expenditures. The empirical analysis relies on data from the Household Budget Survey of the National Statistical Institute for the period 2008–2024. The main objective of the study is to assess the contribution of different expenditure categories to overall inequality. The results show that overall inequality is mainly driven by non-food expenditures, which are more unevenly distributed. The highest inequality is observed in spending on recreation, culture and education, transport, clothing, and housing maintenance. On the other hand, expenditures on essentials such as food, health, housing, and basic utilities (water, electricity, gas, and other fuels) exhibit lower concentration coefficients and inequality levels.
