Summary/Abstract: School textbooks are an important part of Russian state education and propaganda, information from such written sources being used to influence the younger generations. Therefore, the state usually pays attention to the contents of such textbooks, often changing them for political and social reasons. However, sometimes this policy can be opposed as not justifiable in modern conditions. In modern times, the Russian government has changed information on East Asian history, including the Russo-Japanese war of 1904-1905, in school textbooks under influence of the modern political situation and the emergence of new materials. The goal of this article is to consider and analyse the tendencies, information and specifics of accounts of this war in modern Russian school history textbooks. Accordingly, we have considered the most important aspects of the war: 1) the reasons for the conflict, 2) the Port Arthur incident, and 3) the results of the war. The methodological basis of our research combines the historical–comparative method with the hermeneutic method. Rather than attempting to cover all school history textbooks in Russia, we restrict ourselves to secondary and high-school textbooks and do not deal with tertiary education.
