Challenging the official narrative: Indonesian history teachers’ perspectives on teaching alternative histories and promoting civic awareness

Summary/Abstract: This research explores the experiences of history teachers in teaching alternative narratives to complement the official narratives in secondary schools with the aim of instilling civic awareness in students. Using qualitative methods, data were collected through in-depth interviews, classroom observations and document analysis from forty history teachers. The findings indicate that alternative narratives, such as local history and the perspectives of victims, can enrich history learning and enhance students‘ empathy, tolerance and critical thinking skills. However, teachers face challenges such as limited resources, student resistance and curriculum constraints. To address these issues, they adopt strategies such as critical discussions, the use of technology and collaborative projects. This research emphasizes the importance of policy support, teacher training and the development of inclusive curricula to maximize the potential of teaching alternative narratives.
