The Effect of Art Galleries on Urbanization and Cultural Dynamics: A Study Through the M. Rıza Çerçel Culture and Art Center

Summary/Abstract: Museums, art galleries, and cultural and arts centers are important venues that contribute to the cultural and economic development of cities. Therefore, art galleries, which encourage various communities to come together and promote social communication, have the potential to positively influence the city's image and enrich social life in the city. There is insufficient research on the effects of art galleries on city culture and social life in medium-sized cities such as Afyonkarahisar. This research aims to evaluate the position of the CKSM Art Gallery, located in the M. Rıza Çerçel Culture and Arts Center of Afyon Kocatepe University (AKÜ), which has been operating since November 2020, in the cultural and artistic life of Afyonkarahisar. The research was designed as a case study from qualitative research models; the observation method was used to create the data set. In the study, personal and mixed exhibitions held at the AKÜ M. Rıza Çerçel Culture and Arts Center were examined using the descriptive analysis method in the context of the relationship between art and the city. The study is limited to solo and group exhibitions held at the gallery between 2020 and 2025. As a result of the descriptive analysis conducted in the study, the strengths and areas for improvement of the gallery were identified; it was determined that the gallery has the potential to be a destination for cultural tourism due to its social media presence and location in the city center.
