What Do We Know About Women’s Labor History in 19th–20th Century Romania? Historiography, Sources and Approaches for a More Inclusive Social History of the Modern and Contemporary Era

Summary/Abstract: Women's labour history can revitalize the practice of social history in Romanian context. As brief introduction to the field and its potential to help question entrenched narratives, the article highlights key sources, themes, and interpretations regarding the history of women’s labour in Romanian context, linking them to the global historiography of labour. The article reveals the importance of coerced labour—including through the institution of slavery in Wallachia and Moldavia, of women’s precarious employment in the interwar period, and of system-specific caring arrangements enabling women’s full-time paid employment—especially after 1945, for Romania’s history. It claims that the critical handling of existing sources and attention for gendered processes of social knowledge production are essential to researching the social history of Romania, and of Central and Eastern Europe, in an inclusive and rigorous way.
