Joint Commission of the Members of the Government and the Polish Bishops’ Conference during the rule of Law and Justice in 2015-2023

Summary/Abstract: The Joint Commission of the Members of the Government and the Polish Bishops’ Conference is an advisory body established as early as 1949, which was very important for shaping relations between the Catholic Church and the hostile authorities during the People’s Republic of Poland. Although after 1989, the Church gained a clearly better position in Poland, the activity of the Commission has continued. The aim of this text is to analyse the activities of the Joint Commission of the Members of the Government and the Polish Bishops’ Conference during the rule of the Law and Justice Party from 2015 to 2023. To achieve this aim, three research questions are posed: (1) What was the genesis and legal capacity of the Joint Commission of the Members of the Government and the Polish Bishops’ Conference? (2) What did statechurch relations look like during the United Right government from 2015 to 2023? (3) How did the activities of the Joint Commission of the Members of the Government and the Polish Bishops’ Conference influence the decisions of state authorities? The conclusions of the survey indicate that the good relations between the government and the Bishops’ Conference between 2015 and 2023 were reflected in the activities of the Commission, which had an important political role in shaping these relations.
