Summary/Abstract: This paper offers an introduction to Luke Burgis’s articulation of the three-city problem of modern life, arguing that this problem should concern educators more than it currently does. I focus on challenges and opportunities presented by the three-city problem, suggesting that educators can view their work as a poetics of value creation. By conceptualizing their work in the terms set by Burgis, teachers can activate their agency and the agency of their students. This offers educators new hope and a way of responding to artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies.
