Little Hans on a Turkish Sermon, or the Galician Struggle of the Armies of the Central Powers with the Language Barrier

Summary/Abstract: Problems related to linguistic communication between the soldiers of the Ottoman XV Corps, fighting in 1916–1917 on the Eastern-Galician front, and their German and Austro-Hungarian allies are clearly reflected in the documents stored in the Vienna Kriegsarchiv. This text is the first attempt to discuss the scale of the problems that the Turks encountered in their daily contacts with their German-speaking allies, as well as their consequences and the ways in which they were dealt with, both at the formal level and in private contacts (including those with the civilian population of Galicia). Also, for the first time, the author introduces the reader to a brochure he discovered in 2023 in the Kriegsarchiv collection, entitled Wegweiser für Ärzte und Sanitätspersonale zur Verständigung bei Behandlung türkischer Verwundeten und Kranken (A Guide for Doctors and Medical Personnel to Communicate in the Treatment of the Turkish Wounded and Sick), compiled by the Landstorm (Ger. Landsturm) Regiment physician Dr. Alexander Berényi.
