Summary/Abstract: In Mikhail Gasparov’s article on the poetics of the late Bryusov, the poet is compared to Pindar and Horace as inventors of names for establishing culture. At the same time, Gasparov observes in Bryusov’s avant-garde a structure of delayed synthesis rather than invention, in the Hegelian vein, referring the triadic synthesis to Vyacheslav Ivanov’s theory of symbolism. At any rate, Gasparov’s transition from the analysis of the academic avantgarde to the analysis of the second avant-garde in his article on Vsevolod Nekrasov is not entirely clear, nor are his observations on the predominance of Romanticism in the late Brusov. It is clarified by an appeal to Averintsev’s theory, who spoke of gnomic poetry and the gnomic content of the epigram. The gnomic can dispense with names. The academic avant-garde, then, lies not in the use of names, but in turning the image of the future into a key gnomic statement, essential for both the poetics and the fiction of the author. The second avant-garde differs from the first only in that it realizes this transformation seamlessly, assuring in its own professionalism.
