Summary/Abstract: In the production and shaping of folk costumes and other textile products, in Macedonian traditional culture the central place belonged to the woman, who was responsible for the entire activity related to their production. The sphere of women’s culture, which includes all activities related to the preparation and production of textiles, represented a cyclical transmission of knowledge, obligations and moral behaviors, where the entire female population participated in the entire process from the youngest age, up to older years. In the Macedonian traditional society, the ritual and ceremonial activities related to the preparation of textile raw materials and technical-technological processes related to the production of woven fabrics, similar to those related to embroidery, belonged exclusively to female members of the community – a position that led to them being the bearers and transmitters not only of the technical-technological skills of their production, but also of the magical actions and rituals associated with them. They were not only the bearers of these skills, but also the regulators of family, calendar and agrarian-livestock activities. Due to their exceptional importance, weaving, as well as the processes that preceded it (preparation for spinning, warping and weaving the cloth) in the Macedonian traditional culture, were accompanied by a series of ritual activities and beliefs. As a separate entity in this corpus of beliefs and customs, related to a series of ritual practices, there is the act of spinning. The corpus of ritual forms, beliefs and magic in Macedonian folk culture also includes the customs of using the carpet related tobirth, but also wedding and funeral rituals. Based on the above and other analogous customs and rituals, related to the preparation and production of textiles, a series of archaic elements and ritual procedures can be discerned, which are connected with similar ones recorded in the wider Slavic area. At their base are preserved traces of much older rites, customs and beliefs, founded on the basis of the archaic cultures that existed in the wider Indo-European area.
