Genre differences between the proverb and other minor literary wisdom utterances

Summary/Abstract: The paper focused on differentiating between oral wisdom folklore genres and other wisdom literary forms. The purpose was to make a distinction between the proverb as the most common and most researched paremiological genre and other very similar in meaning, and in function, literary genres such as the maxim, sententiae, witticism and quotation. The idea was to portray not only the similarities but the differences between these genres and sometimes the easiest way to achieve this is through concrete examples because defining these specific genres is never an easy task. The paper is intended to be a summarization of part of the work in the national project Lexicon of the Macedonian folklore. Even though maxims, witticism and sententiae are not typically Macedonian genres, they are very close to meaning to the traditional proverb. The non-academic reader rarely makes clear distinctions between these terms, so this is why it is advisable for them to be included in the Lexicon despite these genres being more literary than folkloristic.The key differences between these similar genres lie in the absence/presence of authorship, in their transmission, function, and linguistic form. Proverbs operate as communal instruments of moral and practical guidance, evolving through oral adaptation. Other literary wisdom utterances communicate authorial perspectives, philosophical reasoning, or rhetorical effects within textual frameworks. Recognizing these distinctions is essential to understand their social, cultural, and literary roles and for guiding methodologies in the collection, classification, and interpretation of concise expressions of wisdom, especially in lexicons.
