Summary/Abstract: Over the past government term, Hungary has seen numerous student movements emerge in response to the government’s higher Education policies. The events surrounding the Károli Gáspár University of the Reformed Church in Hungary (KRE) student movement in particular offer valuable insights into how these student-led initiatives take shape. Student movements during the 2022-2026 government term are notably different from those in previous terms. Earlier movements typically focused on national higher educational policy; those between 2022 and 2024 have specifically targeted the ‘university model change’. Another key difference is that activated student unions are organising current movements. Historically, student movements in Hungary have often resulted in students losing out; in recent years, particularly during the current term, institutional educational policy has frequently been compelled to make concessions. It’s also worth noting that Hungarian student movements don’t seem to connect with broader European student movements, such as those focused on climate activism, sustainability, or the Russian–Ukrainian and IsraeliPalestinian wars. Based on all this, we can conclude that Hungarian student movements indicate a new fault line in government higher education policy. Furthermore, grassroots initiatives among students are growing stronger.
