Comics in Career Counseling. Designing Educational Aids in the Life Design Paradigm

Summary/Abstract: RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The aim of the article is to start a discussion on the possibilities of applying the comic book formula for the needs of contemporary career counseling. THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: The research problem concerns the question of the possibility of using comics as an educational aid in career counseling. The method of analyzing the literature on the methodology of designing educational aids in comparison with the literature on tendencies and trends related to contemporary professional careers was used. THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: The article is theoretical and empirical in nature. The first part presents the definitional findings, the theoretical basis of career counseling inspired by constructivist concepts, as well as the assumptions of the methodology of designing educational aids. In the second, in turn, based on the author's educational aid "Career Cartoon" - an empirical analysis of the issue under consideration was made, indicating potential areas of use of the comic strip in career counseling. RESEARCH RESULTS: The results of the evaluation of career counseling activities indicate the need to continue to revise the theoretical foundations of counseling, as well as the accompanying methods of working with young people. Learning concepts inspired by the constructivist trend may be a response to the needs of constructing contemporary careers. The life design trend created on their basis allows for an active approach to building relationships between students and career advisors. In such a consulting paradigm, one can look for innovative teaching and methodological solutions. CONCLUSIONS, RECOMMENDATIONS AND APPLICABLE VALUE OF RESEARCH: Comics is a form that can be applied to the design of innovative educational aids. It also supports the methodological workshop of career counselors who identify with the life design paradigm.
