Hungarian recipe in the United States? Identities, similarities and differences between the USA and Hungary

Summary/Abstract: The study is a synthesis of two studies carried out in 2021 and 2023–2024. The starting point is that although the understanding of academic freedom has different roots, conditions, and history, there are many similarities between the MAGA movement that emerged from Donald Trump’s first presidential term and the arguments and legislation of the higher education policy in the Member States governed by supporters of the MAGA movement, and the trends in Hungary since 2010. The comparison is relevant not only because US leaders, including the re-elected Trump and his vice-president or the governor of Florida, for example, have been keen to invoke Hungarian ‘achievements’ but also because some domestic measures attack the same fundamentally liberal values and views (i.e., diversity, equality, inclusion; DEI) that have been targeted by the federal government in the US.
