The Role of Illustrations in Narratives Visualizing Death and Fading Away in Contemporary Children's Literature - Case Studies

Summary/Abstract: RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The scientific objective of the article is to present the means of artistic expression used by illustrators to "acquaint" the subject of death and transience in children's literature. THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: The research problem is contained in the question about the methods of building narrative through illustrations in children's books about death and transience. The research method used is a qualitative analysis of the content of visual materials. THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: The article characterizes the features and functions of children's literature and the importance of illustrations in works aimed at the youngest. It also refers to the understanding of the processes of transience and transience from the perspective of developmental psychology. RESEARCH RESULTS: Illustrations in children's literature can help introduce the youngest to the subject of death. The images in the analyzed books build a narrative of reflective exploration of the subject. CONCLUSIONS, RECOMMENDATIONS AND APPLICABLE VALUE OF RESEARCH: The conclusions drawn from the research are that illustrations in books about passing and leaving can act as a bridge between the world of children's imagination and reality, introducing gradual familiarization with emotions such as sadness, fear or being lost.
