Summary/Abstract: Over the past three decades, the Hungarian education system has undergone significant expansion. This process was strongly supported by education policies following the regime change, while educational institutions had a vested interest in its continuation. At the same time, students (and their parents) actively pursued higher levels of education, as the labour market promised greater stability and higher earnings for those with advanced qualifications. Since 2010, the government’s stance on this issue has been ambivalent: voices advocating for the strengthening of secondary vocational education – often at the expense of higher education – have gained prominence from time to time. However, government measures in this direction have yielded only temporary results, partly due to the preferences of the population. This study examines two main aspects: first, the changes in the educational attainment of the population between the 2001 and 2022 censuses, and second, the extent to which these changes align with the structure of employment.
