Summary/Abstract: A major challenge for university students is to protect their mental health. Therefore, some method of reducing distress may be necessary. The aim of our research is to assess the distress-reducing effects of yoga through a control group intervention study. In the 13-week intervention 86 university students participated, while the control group consisted of 64 students. Questionnaires were used to assess changes in state and trait anxiety, depression and perceived stress. We found more positive changes in trait anxiety (STAI-T5) and perceived stress (PSS) variables among the yogis than in the control group. Our study partially demonstrated the distress reducing effect of yoga practice.
