Summary/Abstract: The privatization of the Hungarian education system not only leads to a decrease in the number of state schools, but also has profound social consequences, particularly in terms of parental responsibility and social selection. Interviews conducted with parents in Budapest on the topic of school choice reveal that, in the case of private schools, parents place emphasis on certain pedagogical principles and methods, as well as on the search for attention to individual needs. In church schools, however, the primary considerations are the search for a religious environment and safety. School selection often places a significant emotional burden on parents, which frequently leads to stress and anxiety. Ultimately, this contributes to the intensification of social selection, as one of the main elements of caring for their children becomes the search for the “right environment”.
