Summary/Abstract: In competitive sports, the key to adult success lies in optimal youth and talent development. Earlier research indicates that the sports experiences and development of young athletes are significantly influenced by environmental factors and views of coaches. In this study we analysed the documents of the speed skating national federation and conducted a questionnaire to examine the opinions of coaches, athletes, and parents involved in speed skating (N = 164). The results suggest that the sports documents underestimate the importance of youth and talent development. According to our empirical research, the success in adulthood is of most importance, however there are major differences among participants in the sport regarding their views. It is critical for the sports federation to strengthen pedagogical training and activities within the framework of a new communication strategy.
