How Chinese is in N. S. Gumilev’s Porcelain Pavilion? (Notes to the Theme)

Summary/Abstract: The article analyzes the “Chinese” section of N. S. Gumilev’s collection Porcelain Pavilion (1918). The authors consider not only the degree of stylization of these poems under Chinese poetics, but also deeper mechanisms of in tertextual borrowing, examining the real and supposed sources of the poet’s inspiration. The main object of attention is Judith Gautier’s The Jade Book, a French poet and orientalist whose works had a significant influence on the creation of Gumilev’s book of poetry.
