Summary/Abstract: This article examines the influence of ethnographic film on Sergei Tretyakov’s shift from factography to “operativism.” It argues that a key role in this transition is played by the principle of “long-term observation,” connected to the use of movie and photographic camera for recording facts. It further demonstrates that this principle derives from the theory and methodology of ethnographic cinema. The findings clarify the trajectory of Tretyakov’s activity and invite a reassessment of the LEF group’s relationship to ethnography.
