Summary/Abstract: This article explores the diachronic evolution of Sergei Tretyakov’s play Roar, China! From its early translations in the 1930s to the radical rewriting during the Pacific War. Applying André Lefevere’s theory of “rewriting”, the study analyzes how different systems of “patronage” radically reshaped the text. The author compares 1930s leftist translations with Pacific War adaptations instrumentalized for anti-Western propaganda. A focal point is Yang Kui’s Taiwanese version, where handwritten marginalia reveal strategies of hidden resistance against the colonial regime.
