Summary/Abstract: This article examines the process of metaphorization and its cognitive semantic potential within the textual space of literary discourse. The text analyzed is A. Christie’s novel “The Mirror Crack’d from Side to Side.” The results show that the metaphors used by the author generate new meanings based on the non-referential nature of the compared objects, and it significantly broadens the range of contexts in which they are used in the novel: rather than serving only as markers of the author’s individual style or as expressive means, which can, to a certain extent, transform the semantics of textual units of various sizes, they function as cognitive semantic mechanisms that structure the fictional reality. Based on the obtained results, it is concluded that metaphorization reflects the author’s individual worldview shaped by ethnoand linguacultural factors, whereas the background knowledge of the reader, interacting with the author, enables the decoding of the complexes of meanings and expands the cognitive semantic potential of the components of the textual space of literary discourse.
