In Search of Effectiveness

Summary/Abstract: The article analyzes contemporary discussions on the humanities’ effectiveness andits social influence in the context of the academia’s institutional transformations. Theauthor examines various ways of defining the “effectiveness” of humanities research: fromevaluation criteria through science policies to practices of cooperation with the socialenvironment. The article demonstrates the tension between the measurable effects logicand the values of critical reflection and long-term cultural influence. Moreover, the textindicates that seeking effectiveness may lead to a reconsideration of the humanities’ roleas a space for producing socially and politically engaged knowledge.
