Summary/Abstract: The practice of pilgrimage—over two millennia old—has represented and continues to represent an extraordinary form of devotion. It fits within popular religion while remaining canonical in its essence, and it has enjoyed strong adherence within the sensitivity and behavior of Christian believers. In both the Catholic and Orthodox worlds, pilgrimage has profoundly and enduringly shaped the liturgical geography and calendar, giving new impulses to religious sentiment. Born from the inner needs of believers setting out in search of the sacred and the divine, the pilgrimage was not organized by the Church; the Church merely authenticated it as a canonical form of piety, disciplining and guiding it precisely in order to offer pilgrims greater spiritual benefit.
