Summary/Abstract: The American philosopher John Searle has died at the age of 93. He was a major reference point in the philosophy of language, the philosophy of mind, and the ‘philosophy of society’—the latter being a field that some philosophers consider he founded, with the aim of creating a unified theory of the philosophy of mind, language, and society. In Making the Social World (2010), he asked: ‘How is it possible that in a universe entirely made up of physical particles in fields of force there can exist things like consciousness, intentionality [the “aboutness” of thought], free will, language, society, ethics, aesthetics, and political reality?’
