Summary/Abstract: Youth self-harm is defined as intentional, repetitive and direct acts of individuals aimed at inflicting physical injuries on their own bodies. It represents the fourth cause of death among young people aged 19 to 25, and one of the risk factors is developmental and cognitive processes. Aversive developmental experiences shape early maladaptive schemas that may be a factor in an individual's vulnerability to self-injury. They are the result of unsatisfied emotional needs in childhood and dysfunctional family dynamics. They reflect maladaptive cognitions and beliefs that represent individuals' perception of the world around them. The aim of the paper is to analyze and present the results of research on the connection between early maladaptive schemas and self-injury in young people using Young's theoretical framework. Since it is a narrative review work, analysis and synthesis of modern theoretical and empirical findings were applied through the study of relevant literature in various scientific data sources. Different patterns of maladaptive schemas predict self injury. Schema such as social isolation, abandonment and emotional deprivation are associated with fear of abandonment or the expectation of abandonment or a lack of emotional care that includes the expectation that people will leave or be unavailable, characteristic of youth self-injury without suicidal intent. These young people are more inclined to believe that they are inherently unloved, isolated and neglected and unable to cope with everyday life. The Emotional Inhibition scheme is present in self-injury of young people with and without suicidal intentions. Moreover, these young people, exposed to painful and traumatic experiences, experience less fear of death and physical pain, which in turn increases their capacity for self-harm that can have a fatal outcome. Youth self-harm is a complex and significant problem of global concern. Early maladaptive schemas represent a significant cognitive vulnerability associated with youth self-injury, acting as a precursor to maladaptive coping. The importance of knowing the background of schemes of young offending persons is important, first of all, in conceiving the directions of preventive and treatment action inworking with this population.
