Looking Forward to October. The 20th Congress of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union and the June 1956 Events in Poland in the Pages of the Emigration Journal “Narodowiec”

Summary/Abstract: In the first half of the 20th century, there were around 500,000 Poles living in France. They were mainly miners. To meet the needs of the Poles living in France, Michał Kwiatkowski published the journal “Narodowiec”. The pages of this newspaper covered issues both related to the life of Poles in France and issues concerning the situation in Poland, the Soviet Union and other countries of the communist bloc. Important events for the history of communism in Europe took place in 1956, culminating in the so-called October Breakthrough, which brought Władysław Gomułka to power in Poland. Before this happened, other important events took place in the first half of 1956, such as the 20th Congress of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union and the Poznan workers' uprising. The journal “Narodowiec”, published in France for Poles living there, covered all these matters meticulously for its readers.
