Summary/Abstract: The phrase green studies has long been used as a synonym for ecocriticism as an approach to the study of literature. Everyday experience, as well as scientific knowledge, however, suggests that this term is not entirely adequate: Earth is not predominantly green, but rather a blue planet. The issue of water has often been neglected in ecocritical reflections; therefore, the blue humanities can be understood as an environmental humanities perspective that foregrounds hydrological themes as interpretively significant – not only through figurative language, but also through materiality and the relationship with the extratextual world. Following a general introduction to the blue humanities, with particular attention to their possible connections with both scholarly and artistic reception within Serbian literature, the paper concludes with an ecocritical analysis of poems by contemporary Serbian poets Petar Matović („Međuvršje“) and Nenad Jovanović („Čista voda“).
