Summary/Abstract: This present examines the Treaty of Friendship, Good Neighborliness and Cooperation between Bulgaria and the Republic of North Macedonia in the context of the Copenhagen criteria for membership in the European Union. The study is based on the thesis that although it is a bilateral international legal act, its provisions contain elements related to the political criteria for membership. In particular, good neighborly relations, the rule of law and the implementation of international commitments. Through a comparative analysis, it is argued that the degree of implementation of the treaty can be considered as an indicator of progress in European integration. In conclusion, the role of good neighborliness as a de facto component of European conditionality in the enlargement process is emphasized
