Summary/Abstract: This paper examines the analysis of self-images, that is, representations of one’s own nation, in Sebastiano Vassalli’s Gli italiani sono gli altri: viaggio (in undici tappe) all’interno del carattere nazionale italiano and Momo Kapor’s Vodič kroz srpski mentalitet. The authors were selected as representatives of their respective cultures and the same historical period, but primarily due to the distinct self-reflexive positions they adopt in relation to their own cultural identities. Drawing on an imagological framework, the study aims to critically explore the ways in which both authors construct images of collective mentality – the Italian and the Serbian – and to examine their function within a broader cultural and social context. Rather than focusing on representations of Others, which appear directly or indirectly, this analysis is directed at self-reflexive portrayals, enabling the investigation of intracultural perspectives and the constructive problematization of national identity “from within”. The analytical examination of Vassalli’s and Kapor’s discourse reveals both specific patterns of cultural self-perception and universal mechanisms of critical reflection on national stereotypes. The study seeks to contribute to the theory of imagological research by introducing the concept of the self-image as a relevant analytical category in the study of cultural identity.
