Music from the Jasna Góra Tower

Summary/Abstract: A several-decade-long research on various manifestations of the musical culture of the Pauline monastery at Jasna Góra illustrates its rich and diverse traditions, as well as constant concern of the monastery authorities to cultivate it properly and maintain at the highest level. A symbolic landmark of the Jasna Góra sanctuary is the visible-from-afar tower, one of the tallest church towers in Poland, from which the music has also resounded for centuries. The subject of this article is the broadly understood acoustic environment of that place, having hitherto not been covered by detailed research. A specific feature of it are ‘ganki’ (‘porches’) – songs (usually Marian ones) that have been played by the monastery musicians from the porches of the tower ‘to the four corners of the world’ since at least 17th century. The problem is presented in a historical context based on preserved sources and previous studies on the activity of the Jasna Góra chapel.
