Summary/Abstract: The reason for writing this article was the annual festival “The First Factory of the Avant-Garde”, which has been held annually in Ivanovo for seven years, and the Natalie Sarraute intellectual literature fair «Open» is always organized as a part of it. In this regard, questions naturally arise as to why and how this French writer is connected with the cultural image of the city that organizes this event and with the atmosphere of the avant-garde. Using local history research, as well as Sarraute's artistic and literary-critical texts, the article substantiates the possibility of considering the work of the writer, biographically connected with the city of Ivanovo-Voznesensk by the fact of her birth in it, as a manifestation of avant-garde art. It clearly shows a liminal orientation, expressed in the rejection of the traditional attributes of the novel genre. The basis for the radical revision of classical literary forms is the theory of “tropisms” created by her — inexplicable and elusive deep movements of the psyche, which, according to the author, turn out to be the motivating causes that determine our behavior, our actions and, ultimately, our lives. While not as catchy or as loud as the theories of the most radical avant-garde art groups, Sarraute's avant-gardism is at the same time just as audacious in its search for a new artistic language and innovative literary forms. The writer attempts to examine the foundations of human behavior from the inside, showing through the language sphere the interaction of deep subconscious impulses, representing the realm of “tropisms”, with the social environment, which are explained by ideological, moral, behavioral, and other stereotypes that force individual consciousness and the words generated by them to adapt to the rules of the game, ritual, and the space of “common places”.
