Summary/Abstract: The article analyzes the importance of data modeling in digital editing, emphasizing that in historical research the data contained in a source are just as crucial as the text itself. The authors argue that while the TEI standard is well suited for describing textual structure and variants, it is insufficient for fully modeling the narrative of a source and reconstructing the relations between facts, persons, places, or events. Therefore, they propose solutions based on on combining the TEI XML standard with relational and graph databases, which allow for a more precise representation of both the communicative content of the source and its informational layer. The article presents examples of applying these methods, highlighting the editor’s role as an interpreter and the need to develop models that combine faithful representation of the textual layer with the extraction of information essential for historical research.
