Summary/Abstract: There are very few studies dedicated to the teaching of Spanish as a host language, and more specifically, to the textbooks designed for this field of education. Therefore, in this article, we carry out an analysis of open-access textbooks for teaching Spanish as a host, foreign, or second language (SFL/L2) to migrants and refugees, with the intention of addressing questions related to the aesthetics, format, and structure of these materials; the treatment of intercultural competence and their level of inclusivity; as well as the language skills they promote. The corpus consists of nine beginner-level (A1) textbooks, published between 1998 and 2023, in most cases of collective authorship. Our analysis indicates that, overall, these textbooks are primarily produced and disseminated by NGOs and non-profit institutions, and they exhibit significant variability in their formal features. The materials largely offer written activities, and while they reflect some diversity in terms of ethnicity and gender, they largely overlook other important dimensions of diversity.
