FAMILY EMPOWERMENT IN THE PREVENTION OF ADOLESCENT RISK BEHAVIORS THROUGH THE APPLICATION OF TRANSACTIONAL ANALYSIS

Summary/Abstract: Family represents a key protective factor in the prevention of adolescent risk behaviors, but empirical data on the specific mechanisms of action remain insufficiently explored. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between parental awareness based on transactional analysis and adolescent risk behaviors. The study employed a methodology integrating quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis techniques. The sample consisted of 128 parents of secondary school students aged 15 to 18 from the Republic of Srpska. Data were collected using a parental awareness questionnaire from a transactional analysis perspective, an adolescent risk behavior questionnaire, and a family cohesion scale, while the qualitative component comprised semi structured interviews with parents. Results indicate a negative correlation between parental awareness of ego states and adolescent risk behaviors. Parents functioning from the OK-OK life position have children with significantly fewer risk behaviors compared to parents in other positions. Transactional analysis factors (ego state awareness, OK position, and permissions) accounted for41% of the variance in adolescent risk behaviors beyond a model containing only demographic variables. Qualitative analysis revealed four main themes: awakening of parental awareness, a shift toward the OK-OK position, granting new permissions, and visible changes in children's behavior. Findings suggest that the application of transactional analysis can strengthen family resources for the prevention of adolescent risk behaviors.
