The Pseudoepigraph De Dignitate Conditionis Humanae: Its Patristic Sources and a Contribution to the Development of the Concept of Human Dignity

Summary/Abstract: The article analyses the origins, authorship and significance of the pseudepigraph De dignitate conditionis humanae for the development of the concept of human dignity. De dignitate conditionis humanae combining and slightly extending two shorter texts, Dicta Albini de imagine Dei and Dicta Candidi presbiteri de imagine Dei, parallels some formulations to be found in Hilary of Poitiers, Leo the Great, Eusebius Gallicanus and Gregory the Great. The discussion of the origins of the text is thus set against the history of the concept of the dignity of human creation (dignitas conditionis hominis), found in the incipit of De dignitate conditionis humanae, and the related concepts of dignitas hominis, dignitas originis, and dignitas renovationis. Dicta Albini is discussed from the point of view of its innovative contribution to the understanding of human dignity, specifically imago Dei, while the analysis of Dicta Candidi shows a rare example of Latin amphiboly, called “Candid’s illusion”. The article is annexed by a translation of the treatise as well as its parts (Dicta Albini, Dicta Candidi) into Polish.
