Summary/Abstract: The German state is secular, but it is not laic. The quoted specification of the principle of neutrality indicates a friendly cooperation between the state and religious associations. It has been shaped over the centuries. Although German society has become more indifferent and religiously pluralistic, the state authorities do not withdraw from cooperation with religious communities. The role of the churches is debated in the public sphere, with politicians, academics and representatives of religious associations. The German state appreciates the values that religions bring and shows interest in integrating them into the functioning of society.
