Summary/Abstract: By analyzing the uses of the word Abril in media texts, political speeches and poems by Portuguese authors, we aim to show how its meaning has expanded since 1974. As a result of its use before and after April 25, 1974, in literary texts, the media and political discourse, Abril has seen its semantic potential amplified. Beyond its conventional dictionary meanings – ‘fourth month of the year’, ‘flowering season’, ‘youth’ – the word now also encompasses the sense of ‘event’, referring to the revolution that took place in that month in 1974, and of ‘quality’, when evoking the values of ‘freedom’, ‘equality’ and ‘democracy’ restored to Portuguese society by the “Carnation Revolution”.
