Summary/Abstract: In this article, I aim to analyze the key components of the theatrical vision developed by the French philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre and explore the connections between a theatrical play and a performance art action. I will examine the relationship between existential phenomenology and the types of consciousness described by Sartre, in special the concept of „imaginary consciousness”, as well as the way in which the human being perceives a work of art. Through conceptual analysis, I will investigate the definitions of the concept of „popular theater” offered by both Bertolt Brecht and Sartre. Furthermore, I will apply inductive reasoning to support the thesis of performance art, using examples from the visual art of American artist Joan Jonas. Finally, I will discuss Sartre’s continuous involvement in various forms of art, such as film, happening, theater, and dramaturgy, and analyse the interconnections between his philosophy and these artistic practices.
