Summary/Abstract: This paper investigates the relation between the exchange of gazes in the case of the mother-infant relationship and the later, so to say, adult experiences of the beautiful and the sublime. To accomplish this task, I will first need to retrace Marc Richir’s steps towards the connection between the exchange of gazes and the „moment” of sublime. After having established the phenomenological status of this relation, I will move towards the experience of the beautiful and the sublime, taking as an example the contemplation of a landscape. Marc Richir has himself drawn on Donald Winnicott’s psychoanalytical framework, in order to prove how the early mother-infant interactions determine the later aesthetic experiences, such as the pleasure felt by the contemplation of a lanscape, the enjoyment of a play at the theatre and so forth. Richir considers that the missing link between the early mother-infant interactions and later adult aesthetic experiences is to be found in the person of the operative „moment” of sublime. The operative „moment” of the sublime will be our guiding thread throughout this paper, so that we could argue how the early experiences are prolonged into later enjoyment by means of this initial excess of affectivity.
