50 Years of Lusophone Studies in Romania: Some Reflections on the Teaching of Portuguese as a Foreign Language at the University of Bucharest

Summary/Abstract: This article examines the development of Portuguese as a Foreign Language (PFL) in Romania, highlighting the growing interest in this language across academic and professional contexts. The widening of university opportunities and goal-oriented initiatives, together with international cooperation and the creation of adapted teaching materials, has played a key role in strengthening the position of Portuguese within the Romanian higher education landscape. In this framework, the University of Bucharest stands out as a case in point, where Portuguese Studies have developed into a solid and dynamic field, fully integrated into undergraduate and master’s programs, fostering an in-depth engagement with the language, literature, and cultures of the Lusophone world.
