Summary/Abstract: This paper examines the poetic figurations of John of Damascus and the Virgin Mary in Ivan V. Lalić’s poem “The Whisper of John of Damascus” (Letter, 1992), with reference also to Lalić’s collection Four Canons (1996), which is considered in the concluding part of the study. Taking John of Damascus as a literary and theological figure who, within the Orthodox-Byzantine tradition, is regarded as one of the most important hymnographers, the analysis investigates the various ways in which Lalić adopts and contextualizes the Damascene poetic-prayerful voice addressed to the Virgin Mary ‒ a privileged poetic addressee for both Damascus and Lalić. Special attention is devoted to the manner in which Lalić refracts Damascene Marian poetics into his verse, ultimately demonstrating that “The Whisper of John of Damascus” functions as a deeply intertextual (John of Damascus, Laza Kostić, Momčilo Nastasijević) poetic reflection on identity, duration, faith, and cultural heritage. In this context, Damascene’s prayerful whisper becomes Lalić’s poetic whisper ‒ an unfulfilled longing for the re-establishment of continuity and spiritual verticality with the Byzantine legacy.
