Summary/Abstract: The absolute acceptance and understanding of the phenomenon of Corto Maltese, the most famous and memorable character of the European school of graphic novels in the twentieth century, is illuminated, in this work, in the context of Serbian culture, from the angle of the unconscious synesthetic connection of the celebrated work of the ninth art with a domestic literary classic. The protagonist of the work of the celebrated screenwriter and cartoonist Hugo Pratt is measured, through reading in a Sumatranism key, through the poetry and early prose of Miloš Crnjanski, and the unsuspected links between the gentleman of fortune and the characters of The Diary of Čarnojević reveal a characterization on the same basis, which fulfills all the postulates of young Crnjanski’s creative poetics.
