Summary/Abstract: The purpose of this brief article is to examine the many Italian translations of Danilo Kiš’s short story A Tomb for Boris Davidovich, which is part of the collection of the same name (1976). More specifically, the Rijeka-based journal La Battana published the first translation of the single story in 1976. The full collection was translated by Milan-based publishing companies Feltrinelli in 1980 and Adelphi in 2005. The goal is to create a theoretical link between Kiš’s work, the practice of interlingual translation, and political and social factors by examining the methods the translators employed to translate the linguistic and cultural elements of the original text into Italian and accounting for the unique circumstances that marked the contexts of publication.
