Summary/Abstract: This paper presents a comparative analysis of the short story Abuse by Ivo Andrić and The Meek One by Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky, focusing on the tragic fate of their female protagonists. Through their suffering within marriage, both Anica and the Meek One undergo a transformation – from submissive and meek women to those who rebel. The Meek One rebels against her tyrant in several ways, ultimately choosing suicide as her final form of liberation, while Anica passively endures the abuse until she suddenly decides to leave her abuser. The abuse itself stems from the inner insecurity of the male characters, their conflict with society, or a need to prove their own worth. The methods of abuse are silence and speech and they are linked to different narrative techniques employed by the implicit authors. This study applies interpretative, psychoanalytic, and narratological approaches.
