Summary/Abstract: The Teutonic Order appeared on the Iberian Peninsula in the 13th century. It took part in the wars fought by Christian kingdoms against Muslims. It was responsible for protecting pilgrimage routes, especially to the tomb of St. James in Santiago de Compostela. It established hospitals and charitable institutions. Sometimes it became involved in conflicts between the rulers of Castile and Aragon. Information also reached Spain about the wars waged by the Order against Poland and disputes between the two countries on the international stage (especially during the Council of Constance). The news of the Prussian Homage of 1525 aroused particular interest at the Spanish court. At the end of the 19th century, the subject of Polish-Teutonic conflicts returned to Spain thanks to the translation of Henryk Sienkiewicz’s Krzyżacy into the language of Cervantes.
