Coronation of Bolesław the Brave in the Galleries of Polish Monarchs from the Second Half of the 19th Century

Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the problem of presenting the royal coronation of Bolesław the Brave in the light of the galleries of Polish rulers from the second half of the 19th century. Both components of the galleries (the graphic image of the ruler, as well as the historiographic presentation of his biography and reign) have been taken into account. The galleries of polish monarchs by Aleksander Lesser, Ksawery Pillati, Walery Eljasz-Radzikowski and Jan Matejko analyzed below were part of the trend of popularizing native history present in Polish lands during the partitions, thus constituting an extremely valuable educational tool. The analysis conducted showed the existence of two main concepts regarding the date of the coronation (the year 1000 and 1025), as well as certain differences between individual drawings and images, most likely resulting from different interpretations of Polish and foreign chronicles, as well as the tendency to cultivate the memory of Poland's great past, popular during the partitions.
