The evolution of the minimum wage and its implications for income inequality - a study of Poland in the international context

Summary/Abstract: The paper examines the minimum wage as an instrument of income redistribution and its impact on wage and income inequality, with reference to Polish and international evidence. It outlines the historical evolution and institutional frameworks of the minimum wage, as well as theoretical and empirical mechanisms linking minimum wages to labour market outcomes and income inequality. The study concludes that moderate increases in the minimum wage can reduce wage inequality and support social cohesion, but their overall effect on income distribution strongly depends on national institutional settings and enforcement mechanisms. Recommendations in the context of wage policy include balancing redistribution goals with economic efficiency and integrating minimum wage policy into broader social and fiscal policy instruments.
