Two ways of expressing limitativity in Polish

Summary/Abstract: Limitativity is a linguistic representation of a situation whose duration is interrupted i.e. limited to a certain time period. Unlike telicity, such limitation does not imply the possibility of reaching the terminal point and creating a new situation. It is characterized by the presence of a so-called 'not transitional boundary'. In Polish, limitativity can be expressed in two ways: (i) by combining almost any imperfective verb with an adverbium marking a measure of time and (ii) by perfective verbs with limitative meaning, i.e. mainly verbs with the prefix po- and prze-. The author of this article proposes an analysis of limitative meaning at the semantic, syntactic and discursive level. The category of aspect is considered as a semantic category that allows the representation of a situation from the point of view of its phases, duration and singularity or repetition. This definition allows to analyze both grams and verbal lexemes and other linguistic elements of time-aspect meaning.
